Before I post all the photos of the last few days, I will begin with something momentous that occurred for me this morning.
Currently for his pain, Kyle gets a nerve pain medicine intravenously, and a gel medicine which gets rubbed into his elbow, plus he has a pain patch. His doctor has been increasing the amount of each one as I report the amount of pain he is experiencing. This morning, as I was waking up, I heard Kyle "vocalizing" a lot of pain. Although he does not speak yet, he uses the sound "mmmmmm" at varying degrees of loudness depending on how much pain he has. This morning it was quite loud so I went to his bed and did my best to help him ease that pain. It was early with only the two of us. I talked to him softly until his "mmmmm's" became quieter. And then I seized the moment.
"Kyle, let's see if you can say something. Let's turn that "mmmmmm" into a word."
The first word that came to my mind, was Mom. I asked him to watch my mouth. I showed him how to form the word several times. "Kyle, say mmmmmmmoooooom, mmmmmmmoooooom." And then the most beautiful sound rolled off his lips...... "Dad". No,no only kidding! (Greg's humor is rubbing off on me.) On the serious side, he said the most pleasantly spoken "mom" I have probably ever heard him say. What a way to start the morning :)
Kyle's Therapies
Tuesday's Occupational Therapy Jasmine's therapy... being "mean". She puts Kyle's hand in ice water
to see if he will pull it out. He did not.
Wednesday's Physical Therapy.... Leg stretches and leg extensions.
"Touch my fingers, Kyle"
. Kyle is being instructed on good posture. He is told to push his chest muscles out while Alex supports his back. He has lost considerable strength in both his back and neck muscles.
Melanie tells Kyle to lift his head and keep his eyes on her. This will help strengthen his back and neck muscle .
Believe it or not, this is a genuine huge smile from Kyle elicited from Melanie. It may look like he is in pain, but it is truly a smile. It cracked us all up! Best smile ever!

Woo Hoo !! I see major improvements and it is such early days yet!! Once that trach is out and he can eat more he will gain more strength and be able to work even harder. The pain will be holding him back too, but wont be long I reckon before you start to see some really giant leaps forward :-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I'm so happy. Thru the pictures you really can see the progress he is making. Joan don't forget to take care of you.
