"Progress" Continued

My Roller Coaster Ride

Yes, it's been a roller coaster these past few days.  It's Sunday, 2 PM, and I'm in the Garden with a much needed break from Kyle.  It's been a day of mixed emotions, or better yet, a weekend of mixed emotions.

Ahh, my Kyle..... my Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Let me first jump back to Friday and my unfinished "Progress" report.  My last entry was of Jasmine (with photos) guiding Kyle on the best way to move his own left arm.  Shortly after that, Melanie came to me and said she saw some movement in that left arm.  After the bleak prognosis for this arm, you can imagine how excited I was.  Jasmine jumped right on it.

Can you catch Kyle cheating? ;)

Go Kyle, go!

                                     t

This one's hard to tell, but he is bending his elbow!

Kyle has something called heterotopic ossification in his left arm. Here are two links for anyone interested. The first is an easily understandable explanation.  The second one talks of an experimental drug not on the market yet but has been successful in preventing HO in animals. The hope is to use it for the 70% of wounded soldiers that are affected by it.

Jasmine applies a patch with medicine that will start shrinking the excessive bone growth.

Neuropsychiatry?

What goes up must come down, and Kyle has decided not to talk.  And to be ornery, mean, stubborn, you name it.    He has reverted to cave man  like grunts to communicate.  He is loud and obnoxious, and he makes this very ugly face.   It is not just to me, it is to everyone.  He resorted to punching me, along with his tech, while we  were trying to position him this morning.  He used his strength to not budge. I had to call Randilyn, his nurse, for extra assistance.  I love Randilyn.  She knows just what to say to him.  It may take her awhile, but he usually calms down for her and accepts she is right (even though it doesn't last ).

So that's why I was down in the Garden sans Kyle.  He has been this way since last week, so upon advice, I will have him meet with the neuropsychiatrist tomorrow.

Oh where is big brother when we need him?  Well....for those who don't know, Alex has moved to Wisconsin, to embark on his own journey.... a new job, and new adventures.  He will be back on shorter weekend visits, and we look so forward to him being here.

Friends

With Kyle's behavior as it was, there was a small call for concern for visitors this weekend.  I just couldn't imagine if he was rude to them.  But a visit from Kyle's buddies made Saturday a delight.

Luke, Chris, and Herbie came early, while Michael, Jake and Kim arrived past noon.  The two hours of overlapping time had the boys playing air hockey, building legos (courtesy of Herbie!) and eating Mellow Mushroom pizza!  I got to enjoy a much needed outing with Herbie.  We spent some enjoyable, quality time over beers, solving the world's problems, while waiting for our pizza.

Herbie.....you're the best!

When we got back, I was thrilled to see Kyle playing some Air Hockey!  And when they told me he talked, it was just icing on the cake.

More photos from Saturday's visit coming tomorrow.
